noise induced hearing loss

3M “Have You Heard?” aims to ask people from around the world why their hearing matters to them.

To prevent noise-induced hearing loss, 3M encourages workers to wear hearing protection when exposed to sound levels higher than 85 decibels

ST. PAUL, Minn. – For an estimated 275 million people around the world, “What?” is an all too common question. That’s because these individuals have disabling hearing loss, many due to excessive noise both on and off the job.

To help people avoid noise-induced hearing loss, 3M has launched a social campaign called “Have You Heard?”, which aims to get people thinking about the sounds around them that matter the most. “Have You Heard?” was designed to help us start conversations about noise-induced hearing loss. We acknowledge that loud noises can harm our hearing, and we understand the tremendous benefits of wearing hearing protection. But what we want to know is why this is important to you. We want you to be fans of the sounds around us.

What is the sweetest sound you’ve ever heard?
What’s you least favorite sound and why?
What do you like to hear?
What’s your all-time favorite song and where were you when you first heard it?
What sound would you miss the most if you were to lose your hearing tomorrow?

We go through life and sometimes not give sounds a second thought; celebrations, whispers, children, pets, and even the everyday sounds that may not register when your conscious is busy with other tasks. We want you to engage with us and tell us your stories on sound and what sounds are important to you.

If you’d like to share your story and submit a photo, please download the entry kit and send your submission to haveyouheard@mmm.com. Please include the following information in your submission:

• Your First Name and Last Name
• Your City, State and Country
• Your Age
• A short statement (50-500 words) responding to one of the questions above about the sounds around you and hearing protection.
• Approval to use your Photo and Statement as part of the Safety Now & Next Blog
• Your photo submission should be at least 1200 x 1200 pixels and 72 dpi
